A MUAH stands for Multi-Unit Assisted Housing with Services.

It is a type of housing arrangement recognized under North Carolina law where residents live in independent apartments or rooms but can receive supportive services, typically through a separate home-care agency or wellness provider.

The legal framework for MUAHs is found in North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 131D.

A MUAH is not the same as an assisted living facility or adult care home.

  • The building provides housing (apartments or units).

  • Services are provided separately by outside providers (often home-care agencies).

Because of this structure:

  • The housing provider is registered, not licensed.

  • Residents choose or contract for services separately.

Residents in MUAHs generally:

  • Live in private units

  • Maintain tenant rights

  • Choose their service providers

  • Can accept or decline services

This structure is intended for people who need some help but not the level of care required in a licensed assisted living facility.
